Who can be the top of the car industry in China?

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-07 17:15:20

Chinanews, July 7 – According to Guangzhou Daily, General Motors China
claimed the top of the car industry in China as it had sold 453,800 cars
in the first half of 2006, 47% more than last year. At the same time,
Volkswagen China said that it had sold 345,400 cars in China in the first
6 months, and the growth rate was 30.2%, thus it should be the "leader of
the industry". The international car tycoons are starting a fierce
competition for the number one of the car industry in China.
Guangzhou Daily estimated that this competition would not end very soon.
It is generally believed that GM China had overwhelmed Volkswagen by its
fast speed in releasing new products to the market. Some people from GM
China also admitted that the multi-brand strategy had contributed a lot
to its outstanding achievement. There are also some people doubting the
fast pace of GM China. Someone from a joint-venture car producer said
that Shanghai GM had gone too fast, and its development was not well
balanced, thus problems would very probably arise in the future.
With the competition in the car market growing fiercer, the war between
international and local enterprises also has become fiercer and fiercer.
Now it is not easy for any enterprise to remain at the top for long. The
price war has already become part of everyday life in the car industry.
Volkswagen has already tried to "strike back" after realizing that it
could not remain the top since last year. With personnel reshuffle (it
changed its CEO in China last year) has come a series of new strategies.
The advantage of being one of the first comers has helped Volkswagen to
take 17.1% of the market share.
Toyota, which had all along remained very reserved ever since its coming
to China, has started to strike out with all its might. The low price of
Reiz last year has nearly shaken the price system of the cars in China to
its foundation, and Camry will be another trump card this year.
